AdiGaskell.org Department Stores Review

Argos

Argos has migrated its incredibly successful business model to the Internet with Argos.com. The site manages to maintain the ethos of Argos that has made it so popular. The site is basically split into two sections. You can enter catalogue details and have products reserved to be picked up at your local store or delivered to your house, or you can browse their products online and shop ala most e-commerce sites. You either love or hate Argos, and if you are one of those that love them then this site will be for you.

Littlewoods Extra

The Littlewoods Extra website is probably one of the simplest to use on the Internet. It differs from the main Littlewoods site in little else except the fact that Extra is cheaper. The site search function makes it easier to use than the catalogue. The range and quality of products is also good and you can generally find what you are after quickly, easily and cheaply.

Debenhams

The self styled 'Britains favourite department store' is now online. The shop allows you to browse the complete Debenhams Direct catalogue. Delivery costs £2.95 per order, which is quite reasonable when compared to the bricks and mortar deliveries offered by Debenhams. The site is layed out sensibly without being particularly pretty and to shop at Debenhams.com is an overall satisfying experience.

John Lewis

The online offerings of John Lewis, one of the UK's leading department stores, are limited to outdoor eating, garden furniture, sport, computing and bedroom. The product range under each of those categories is significant however, which coupled with John Lewis' free returns policy. The site is layed out clearly and concisely and if you don't fancy paying a visit to John Lewis on a cold, wet afternoon then their website provides an excellent alternative.

Marks and Spencers

The online offering from middle Englands favourite department store is typically cleanly designed and layed out. The site offers all of the products sold in the stores at prices slightly lower than high street prices. M&S deliver to practically the entire of the UK for a typical charge of around £4. The sites clean design makes it easy to navigate and buying goods is made easy by their check out system. Overall a good effort.

Allders

Allders.com is one of the largest and most successful UK department store sites and offer a wide range of household and fashion goods. The quality of merchandise is high, and everything they sell is a little unusual and original, with their being almost always something good on the 'sales rack', especially in the clothes section.

Woolworths

The Woolies website tends to mirror their offline stores. They stock a wealth of products in a wide range of categories but the site tends to look a bit messy and cluttered. Looking past the aesthetic values of the site and there are many good offerings on the site. The ordering process is simple and straight forward and delivery is promised to be within 3 days. Overall a pretty good effort, just a pity about the design.
