Indian Railways turns to the crowd for live travel information

indian-railways-1With India being such a vast country, it is often difficult for its 1 billion or so people to find accurate travel information.  Rail information site RailYatri has turned to the crowd in an attempt to solve the difficulties.

They have recently launched a site called RailWisdom, which will collect travel experiences from rail users, before collating that information to provide live, accurate information about particular stations and trains.

This information has traditionally been spread around a wide range of sources, making it challenging for travelers to get the information they need.  RailWisdom will aggregate it together into one source to allow users to get information about both their destination and the trains they intend to board.

The site has been developed by Stelling Technologies, who also operate the Indian Railways enquiry portal trainenquiry.com.

“Perhaps, there is no other medium of transport that brings forth the diversities of this vast nation as trains and with 22 million travellers everyday, it is one of the largest public transports in the world,” Stelling Technologies CEO said about RailWisdom.

“Our efforts to maintain trainenquiry.com gave us the idea that we can also come out with a service which can collect the experiences of travellers and make it available to the public at large,” Stelling Technologies Co-founder and Advisor Sachin Saxena said.

“So far, we have put information about 1,400 stations and 400-500 trains on RailWisdom. We are expanding it. Meanwhile, our Facebook page has got about 1.41 lakh followers and we will launch RailWisdom for mobile-based platform by next month,” Rathi continued.

With over 22 million passengers carried each day on Indian Railways, there exists considerable potential to solicit a wide range of information about journeys.  The challenge will come in securing this information in a timely manner.  The obvious channel for doing so would be via mobile devices, but there remains doubts over the mobile data infrastructure in India.

  1. Travelling by train in india is safe but make sure you travel by AC class and avoid Non AC travelling and just make sure you have an eye on your luggage and have it locked under your Seats/Berths allocated to you.

    • Indeed. It is the most widely used mode, for people travelling in Mumbai. Infact most convenient, considering the traffic situation here. The time ratio of train compared to any other mode of road transport is almost 1:3

    • Yes i agree with you people come to India from other countries they must book 1st class ac ticket because in Sleeper and other classes people harass a lot to foreigners. I have seen myself local crowd tend to give a strange look to foreigners which is not comfortable for me.

  2. With the advent of mobile devices the possibilities are endless in finding ways to improve services and involve the very people who use it on a daily basis. A commendable idea and would work in all countries. Well done India.:)
