Finally some LinkedIn group analytics

Running a B2B community for CMI LinkedIn groups have been incredibly valuable for engaging members in management related discussions. A pretty major drawback of the groups however has been the lack of statistics provided on group activity. Until now.

Suffice to say I wasn't notified directly about the change, but when managing the group this morning there is a nice button alerting me of some stats to devour.

linkedin stats

It was hard to contain my excitement.  The stats area currently contains three main bits:

  • Demographic breakdown of your group (at the moment seniority, function, location and industry)
  • Membership growth
  • Activity growth

Previously I'd been manually logging a lot of this information but it's great to see LinkedIn creating an official stats package for groups.  Hopefully this will be the start of some additional functionality in this area.

    • It is odd. Pretty much every online marketer/community builder is crying out for metrics they can use to show return on investment, so the lack of any official figures on Groups activity has been one of the big hurdles to using them heavily. So this is a big change for the better.

  1. What's also interesting is that you can view the analytics of any other group that you're a member of. Now that really is valuable.

    • That is very interesting. It's a lovely move but I wonder how long they'll be providing open access to all group stats. Great news for competitor analysis.

  2. Of course this is also useful if you wanted to gauge the demographics of a group prior to joining. So if you want to network with a specific type of people, ie mainly UK managers, then you can now see if a group fits that bill.

  3. The more information you can discern from your LinkedIn Groups the better. Marketers are always looking for that new insight into the minds of their audiences and having these analytics to work with is going to be a big help.

  4. I think this could now add another meaning as to how effective using LinkedIn could be for businesses. This will be especially effective in the line of work such as self promotion and how well people can find you for what you do. This could well give LinkedIn a whole new importance.
